Blind Date With A Book

The past few years I have seen glimpses of this idea of "Blind Dating" a Book. So this year I decided I would give it a try and here is how I did it:

I first picked a wide variety of genres so that each student would have the opportunity to make the choice based upon something they might like - I mean don't we all narrow down blind dates somehow.

Next I wrapped each title in red butcher paper and cut out the bar-codes so that  the students could check out the book without having to unwrap it (this was probably the most time consuming of everything)

I then found a popular or catchy quote from the book, without giving the title away, and printed it on plain white paper and wrapped it around the front of the wrapped book. I then had one of my crafty students add twine and a fun little Valentine note to the book.

I also set up a fun incentive, that if you came and "blind dated" a book, that you would enter your name into a drawing for a Starbucks gift card - lets just say this helped bring students in that don't normally enter the library or even check out books for that matter. We introduced it at lunch and after that lunch period, I was already out of books and needed to wrap more. If you venture to do this, I would recommend that wrap twice as many books as you expect (this is what I had to do), but it is well worth it!

Library Tool # 3

What Should I Read Next is an awesome website that guides you through what you read after finishing a book you liked. This is a great tool when you have students who have read a book that you may or may not be familiar with and wants something like it read. It's basically a cheat-sheet for librarians to help out their patrons find something they might like to read. I also used this site as a tool to help create the "If You Liked, Then Read" posters.

Library Tool # 2

Pinterest has not just been a major time waster in my life, but a huge platform for inspiration when it comes to my library. We are in the process of remodeling the interior of our library and I have been able to not only look up some great ideas for furniture but ideas on decor as well.

Pinterest is also a great way to get your own ideas out there to others. Post and share away and see how many people love your ideas. It is a great tool for collaboration for librarians!

If you're a Pinterester* (I have no idea if that is a word but it means one that uses Pinterest), follow my "Yes I 'm a Librarian" Board.

Library Tool # 1

There are a multitude of different tools out there to use within the library to make life much easier. I mean why reinvent the wheel when its already rolling!

So I have decided to share a few tools that have helped me to select books, organize books, and decorate my library.

TOOL # 1:

Good Reads is a website that allows a community of readers to share their own personal digital library of books. I love this site for multiple reasons and here are just a few:

  1. I can keep track of books that I want to read. How many of us have made a list of books either on a sticky note, in a journal or on the computer? And how many of those lists have been lost or forgotten? This site allows you to track books that you want to read, are reading and have read. It is a wonderful book tracker!
  2. Sharing is caring! Good Reads allows you to add friends to your own personal community. When someone updates their lists, you get a notification as to what they are reading or have read. It is a great way to find new titles that you may not have known about. Also, you can create a list of titles or view lists that others have created. This is a fantastic way to find out about new titles!
  3. Reviews, Reviews, Reviews: I am a librarian that likes to know what is in a book before it goes on my shelf. This is a great place to view everyday people's reviews on the title. Some of these reviews have been tremendously helpful when choosing my selection for my library.
If you need new a new friend on GoodReads, look me up here!

Reading is not for the Wimpy....

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid has to be one of the most popular series in my library, especially for the boys. Many of them have read the entire series, if that is the case for your students or child, here are some suggestions as what to read next!

You can dowload the full PDF here:

Happy Reading!

For the Lovers of Divergent...

I think that the Divergent series has to be one of my favorite. If you love it as much as I do, read some of these titles.....

This Better Be Good... Updated

Its official, one of my favorite books is hitting the big screen! (Plus book three is coming out soon...yet not soon enough) This news is geeking me out! I am super impatient and ecstatic all at the same time! But also trying not to allow myself to get too excited because let’s be honest, most books turned movies don't do the book justice.

I'm only willing to wait if the product is perfect (or at least close to it) But I'm mostly geeking out!

I'm pretty impressed with the casting and so far it looks good.

I CAN'T WAIT!
(okay I think that I can breathe normally again)

UPDATE:

Here is the official trailer!

Weekend Read...In Honor

This weekend was absolutely beautiful outside, and a great reason to continue with my list of "must-reads“. In Honor by Jessi Kirby was my choice of reads! It is about a teenage girl getting ready to head off to college when she gets the news that her brother has been killed in Iraq. The premise of the book is about her and her brother's best friend dealing with their grief on a journey to fulfill her brother’s final letter (there is some language as well as minor sexual references). There were many different times that I needed to stop and wipe my eyes from the tears that streemed down my face. It is a fantastic book for young adult readers or readers who enjoy young adult books who have loved books like The Fault in Our Stars or A Second Chance Summer.

IHighly Recommend this book!
